Who We Are

Based in Chicago, Merit Capital Partners has raised over $2.7 billion through seven institutionally sponsored limited partnerships.

We focus on high-quality, established businesses with carefully conceived operating strategies. Our goal is to work with committed owners and strong managers to help increase a company’s value.

Our investor base includes insurance companies, large domestic and international pension funds, university endowments, family offices and high net worth individuals, for whom Merit’s consistent investment strategy provides both current yield and meaningful upside.

Funds one through four have been fully realized; funds five and six have been partially realized (still pursuing add-ons); and fund seven is being actively invested.

Our History

Merit has a long history investing junior capital. Since 1993, we have made over 95 investments across seven funds. Merit has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to navigate through various economic conditions and provide liquidity for varying shareholder needs.

Who We Partner With

As an investor of both equity and subordinated debt, Merit is both a shareholder and a lender in each transaction.  Our flexible approach allows us to consider many types of investment partnerships.

Owners and management teams:

We are very comfortable “sponsoring” transactions, handling the entire investment process ourselves and supplying all necessary capital.

Small or Independent Sponsors:

In addition, we often work with small or independent sponsors by providing equity capital along with subordinated debt to support larger investments that these groups may not be able to complete alone.

In addition, many of our portfolio company executives have also invested their own capital alongside us in individual transactions.

How We Partner

In addition to monitoring all ongoing investments, we continually seek opportunities to work with committed owners and strong managers to enhance value in our portfolio companies.

Merit helps drive value creation through:

  • Enhancing management teams and helping establishing succession plans
  • Investing in people, systems and facilities to drive growth
  • Diversifying end markets, customer base and product mix
  • Evaluating and executing M&A opportunities
